Advertising is a form of marketing communication used to persuade an audience to take or continue some action, usually with respect to a commercial offering, or political or ideological support. In Latin, ad vertere means “to turn toward”.
Blog (aka Weblog) is a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style. Bought traffic through paid search listings. A business pays search engines to show an ad that links to their website. There are a number of ways to pay for this traffic. These ads show at the top and/or the right side of the search engine page and have a little yellow ad symbol.
Brand Management – In marketing, brand management is the analysis and planning on how that brand is perceived in the market. Developing a good relationship with the target market is essential for brand management. Tangible elements of brand management include the product itself; look, price, the packaging, etc.
Brand Position – Although there are so many different definitions of brand positioning, probably the most common is: identifying and attempting to occupy a market niche for a brand, product or service utilizing traditional marketing placement strategies (i.e. price, promotion, distribution, packaging, and competition).
Branding is a brand management technique that uses the World Wide Web as a medium for positioning a brand in the marketplace. Website creation and optimization, social media, blogs, online press releases, and video marketing are all methods used for online branding purposes.
Paid Unpaid Browser – A web browser (commonly referred to as a browser) is a software application for retrieving, presenting and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI/URL) and may be a web page, image, video or other piece of content.
Citation is a reference to any item (book, journal article, dissertation, archival manuscript, newspaper editorial, report, website, musical composition, etc.) which clearly identifies the source in which the fulltext of the item is to be found. Client acquisition cost is the cost associated in convincing a customer to buy a product/service. This cost is incurred by the organization to convince a potential customer. This cost is inclusive of the product cost as well as the cost involved in research, marketing, and accessibility costs.
Cloud Computing or using “the cloud” – Cloud computing is a recently evolved computing terminology or metaphor based on utility and consumption of computing resources. Cloud computing involves deploying groups of remote servers and software networks that allow centralized data storage and online access to computer services or resources. Clouds can be classified as public, private or hybrid.
Communication – Any form of interaction with customers, whether verbal, digital, or on paper.
CRM (Customer resource management) – Customer relationship management (CRM) entails all aspects of interaction that a company has with its customers, whether it is sales or service-related. While the phrase customer relationship management is most commonly used to describe a businesscustomer relationship (B2C), CRM systems are also used to manage business to business to business (B2B) relationships. Information tracked in a CRM system includes contacts, clients, contract wins and sales leads and more.
Customer Experience (CX) – Quality of experience a person has that would validate buying decision and increase a customer’s liking of a business. (CX) is the sum of all experiences a customer has with a supplier of goods and/or services, over the duration of their relationship with that supplier. This can include awareness, discovery, attraction, interaction, purchase, use, cultivation and advocacy.
Dashboard web page or portal that provides links to key information and useful tools on a website. Dashboards allows for easy navigation through a website’s many pages. Dictionary, Thesaurus and Translator are pages offered by Dictionary.com. These menu items help the person to navigate the site.
Database is a structured set of data held in a computer, especially one that is accessible in various ways such as a list of customers, each of their addresses, phone numbers, account number; birthdays, etc. are example of data that would be stored in a database.
Emails are messages distributed by electronic means from one computer user to one or more recipients via a network. Email marketing is directly marketing a commercial message to a group of people using email. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing.
Engagement – customer engagement is the engagement of customers with one another, with a company or a brand. The initiative for engagement can be either consumer- or company-led and the medium of engagement can be on or offline. Online customer engagement is qualitatively different from offline engagement as the nature of the customer’s interactions with a brand, company and other customers differ on the internet. Discussion forums or blogs, for example, are spaces where people can communicate and socialize in ways that cannot be replicated by any offline interactive medium.
Customer Engagement – Marketing efforts that aim to create, stimulate or influence customer behavior differ from the offline, one-way, marketing communications that marketers are familiar with. Feedback Information about reactions to a product, a person’s performance of a task, etc., used as a basis for improvement.
Google Plus offers anyone a page that features posts, photos, videos and an about page. Google my business, lets Google put info on Search, Maps and Google+ so customers find you easier. Google Maps allows anyone to find any locations in the world. It can show the street view, with or without traffic, or terrain view showing roads, houses and trees, or featured photos of the location.
Index – In database design, a list of keys (or keywords), each of which identifies a unique record. Indexes make it faster to find specific records and to sort records by the index field — that is, the field used to identify each record. (v.) To create an index for a database, or to find records using an index.
Internet: a global system of interconnected computer networks that use a standard Internet protocol to link several billion devices worldwide.
Keywords are specific words or phrases that, when entered in Search Engines, will cause them to display a result. Dentist, car wash, restaurant, movie theaters, window treatment, “where is Albuquerque”, “best air fare”, are all keywords. It’s what the person wants to find on the World Wide Web.
Lifetime Value of a Customer – In marketing, customer lifetime value (CLV) (or often CLTV), lifetime customer value (LCV), or user lifetime value (LTV) is a prediction of the net profit attributed to the entire future relationship with a customer. Listing means you appear in a web directory, like your name in a phone book.
Marketing – From a societal point of view, marketing is the link between a society’s material requirements and its economic patterns of response. Marketing satisfies these needs and wants through exchange processes and building long-term relationships.
Media – The main means of mass communication (especially television, radio, newspapers, and the Internet) regarded collectively.
Mobile – Pertaining to or noting a cellphone or tablet, usually one with computing ability, or a portable, wireless computing device used while held in the hand.
Mobile Friendly – A mobile-friendly website is an HTML based website that doesn’t contain Flash. At the very least, this type of website is recommended.
Mobile Optimized – A mobile optimized website is a website that is designed specifically for smartphones, not a desktop computer.
Network Value of a customer is Lifetime Value of a Customer plus organic word of mouth marketing that customer brings to the business.
Online – To be online means a computer or other device such as a cell phone that is “controlled by or connected to a computer” and is an activity or service which is “available on or performed using the Internet or other computer network”. For example, a home computer is online when it is turned on, and is connected via a modem that is also turned on and actively connected to other computers through the person’s
Internet Service Provider (ISP) – AT&T, Time Warner, Charter, Comcast are some ISPs. They provide presence on the Internet for their local areas to anyone who buys their service.
Optimized: A web site that is designed, written and programmed in a way that Search Engines find it easily.
Organic is what comes up on a search engine page when someone enters in a search term. Eg. Someone in LaVerne, California is looking for a car wash place in their neighborhood: Then hit return on the keyboard. It’s what search engines show based on the keyword, or search terms entered in. These are called Organic. They are not advertisements. Type in the keywords “car wash” in the search field. Positioning is defined as the way by which the marketers attempt to create a distinct impression in the customer’s mind; specifically, “the place a product, brand, or group of products occupies in consumers’ minds relative to competing offerings”.
Public relations (PR) is the practice of managing the spread of information between an individual or an organization (such as a business, government agency, or a nonprofit organization) and the public. Professional referral occurs when an individual is referred from one professional care worker to another for advice or treatment.
Promotion refers to raising customer awareness of a product or brand, generating sales, and creating brand loyalty. A promotional plan can have a wide range of objectives, including: sales increases, new product acceptance, creation of brand equity, positioning, competitive retaliations, or creation of a corporate image. Fundamentally, there are three basic objectives of promotion.
Ranking – In SEO and SEM terms, rank (or ranking) refers to where a Web site or Web page is ranked within search engine results. For example, if your Web site is about microphones, when a person queries “microphones” in a search engine, your ranking indicates where in the search results your Web page is listed (e.g. within the top 5 results, on the first page, the 300th page and so on). A Web page rank within a search engine is also commonly called a position.
Referral is an act of referring someone or something for consultation, review, or further action. The directing of a patient to a medical specialist by a primary care physician. A person whose case has been referred to a specialist doctor or a professional body.
Referral development – A medical or dental specialty practice must have a strong referral base that consistently sends patients to your center. Patients who do not refer themselves directly to your center will rely on the recommendation of their primary care physician or family doctor when they need treatment.
Referral Marketing is a method of promoting products or services to new customers through referrals, usually word of mouth. Such referrals often happen spontaneously but businesses can influence this through appropriate strategies.
Reputation of a social entity (a person, a social group, an organization) is an opinion about that entity, typically a result of social evaluation on a set of criteria. It is important in business, education, online communities, and many other fields.
Reputation Management – Reputation management is the influencing and/or control of an individual’s or business’s reputation. Originally a public relations term, the advancement of internet and social media use, along with reputation management companies, have made it primarily an issue of search results.
Reputation Marketing – The reputation marketing field has evolved from the marriage of the fields of reputation management and brand marketing. In the socially connected world of the new millennium a brand’s reputation is vetted online nearly in real-time by consumers leaving online reviews and citing experiences on social media websites.
Responsive Web – An approach to web design aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones)
Review is an evaluation of a publication, service, or company such as a movie (a movie review), video game, musical composition (music review of a composition or recording), book (book review); a piece of hardware like a car, home appliance, or computer; or an event or performance, such as a live music concert, play, musical theater show, dance show, or art exhibition. In addition to a critical evaluation, the review’s author may assign the work a rating to indicate its relative merit. More loosely, an author may review current events, trends, or items in the news.
Review Site – A review site is a website on which reviews can be posted about people, businesses, products, or services. These sites may use Web 2.0 techniques to gather reviews from site users or may employ professional writers to author reviews on the topic of concern for the site.
RSS Feed (Rich Site Summary) – A format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many newsrelated sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it. Sales the exchange of goods, property, or services for an agreed sum of money or credit.
Search Engine – A web-based tool that enables users to locate information on the World Wide Web. Popular examples of search engines are Google Yahoo!, and Bing .
Search Marketing – The process of gaining traffic and visibility from search engines through both paid and unpaid efforts. Search Marketing encompasses: SEO and SEM.
SEM: Search Engine Marketing is a type of Internet marketing associated with the researching, submitting and positioning of a website within search engines to achieve maximum visibility and increase your share of paid and/or organic traffic referrals from search engines.
SEO: Search Engine Optimization is the phrase used to describe processes to obtain a natural placement on organic search engine results pages Servers are computers with specific computer programs that manage access to centralized resources or services in a network. Web sites are hosted (reside) or a server. Social of or relating to society or its organization.
Social Media: websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Star Rating Stars are often used as symbols for classification purposes. They are used by reviewers for ranking things such businesses, service quality, films, TV shows, restaurants, and hotels. For example, one to five stars is commonly employed to categorize hotels.
Third Party Review Site – Third party reviews are hosted by independent companies that provide credibility to the reviews. Reviews on 3rd party sites are verified as being from actual customers of the business. As such, reviews on 3rd party sites help you build a solid reputation as a business that provides good service and that cares about what their customers have to say.
Tracking: Keeping a record the performance of a website, an advertising campaign, the number of reviews or feedback obtained, how often a website is viewed or how often a paid or unpaid link is clicked. It also can include the number of new potential customers that come from a particular ad campaign, or other marketing activity.
Traffic is the number of visitors and visits a Web site receives.
Web Address i.e.: www.yahoo.com , it generally takes you to their website’s home page, which should introduce you to what that site offers in terms of information or other services. From the home page, you can click on links to reach other sections of the site. A website can consist of one page, or of tens of thousands of pages, depending on what the site owner is trying to accomplish.
Web Directory or Link Directory is a directory on the World Wide Web. It specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links. Yelp.com, Urbanspoon.com, healthnet.com are web directories for general business, restaurants and health care respectively.
Web position: Where a web site appears in Search Engine results when keywords that reflect that web site’s content are chosen. Website: A website is a collection of web pages (documents that are accessed through the Internet), such as the one you’re looking at now. A web page is what you see on the screen when you type in a web address, click on a link, or put a query in a search engine. A web page can contain any type of information, and can include text, color, graphics, animation and sound.
Word of Mouth – Informal oral communication. Words spoken from one person to another. In marketing this is when people share information about services, products or promotions with friends.
WWW or “World Wide Web” – It is important to know that this is not a synonym for the Internet. The World Wide Web, or just “the Web,” as ordinary people call it, is a subset of the Internet. The Web consists of pages that can be accessed using a Web browser. The Internet is the actual network of networks where all the information resides.
